An M3U playlist is a simple text list of streams. An IPTV M3U link is a web address that returns that list, personalised with your username and password. Paste it into an app’s “Add playlist” option and the app builds your channel list from it.

What is inside an M3U file

Each channel takes two lines: a description line starting with #EXTINF (name, group, logo, guide ID) and the stream address. Simplified, it looks like this:

#EXTINF:-1 tvg-id="news.example" group-title="UK News",Example News HD

The group-title is what creates the country and category groups in your app, and tvg-id links each channel to the TV guide.

Public playlists shared on forums and code sites are lists of other people’s streams. When the source changes, every link breaks; many are unlicensed; and some redirect to malware or phishing pages. The short-term saving is rarely worth it — a free trial of a real service is the safer way to test IPTV.

M3U questions

What is an M3U playlist?

A text file — or a link to one — that lists streams: each line gives a channel’s name, group, logo and stream address. IPTV apps read it to build your channel list.

What is the difference between M3U and M3U8?

M3U8 is the same format saved in UTF-8 encoding, which handles accented and non-Latin channel names. Most apps accept both.

Are free public IPTV playlists safe?

They break constantly, are often unlicensed, and some point to unsafe links. See free IPTV: the real risks.

Should I use M3U or Xtream Codes?

Xtream Codes when your app supports it: it loads channels, VOD, series and the guide in one go. Use M3U for apps that only accept playlists.
